The Stratus was powered by a 134 hp two-liter in-line four-cylinder with 16 valves, coupled with a five-speed gearbox or a four-speed automatic; alternatively, there was a Mitsubishi-derived 2.5-liter V6 with four-speed automatic or a 2.4-liter double-camshaft four-cylinder. Offered were a basic model and the Stratus ES with upscale amenities.
In 1999, the Stratus received slight external modifications. ES models also get 4-wheel discs. Other changes include a revised suspension designed to increase ride comfort, new wheel covers on the base model, and new alloy wheels on the ES.
