The JDM AE/AF/AS type was released on July 1, 1983 as the "Ballad Sport CR-X" and outside of Japan as the "CIVIC CRX." .
A fastback coupe -style body with a hatch gate at the rear and a truncated tail end . It has a characteristic that can reduce air resistance without stretching. The car body is also characterized by its lightness, and the front fender and door exterior panels are made of a composite material based on ABS resin and polycarbonate is adopted for the front and rear bumpers , and the vehicle weight is 760 kg ("1.3" 5-speed MT ) / 800 kg ("1.5i" 5-speed MT) . Combined with the extremely short wheelbase of 2,200 mm, the handling is extremely quick, so the reaction of the neutral part of the steering angle was deliberately set to be somewhat dull.
There are two types of engines: a 1.5L EW engine ( PGM-FI specification) and a 1.3L EV engine ( carburettor specification). A 1.5L carburettor specification was also set for the Japanese market, just like the Civic. The grades are 1.3L "1.3" and 1.5L "1.5i". In "1.5i", you can select an outer slide sunroof, drive computer + digital meter , roof ventilation, etc., and the MT specification final gear ratio is 4.4. And it is low geared, and the acceleration performance is increasing.
The suspension also has its own innovations, with struts and torsion bars on the front (reaction tubes are used to shorten the length), sway bearings on the right side on the rear, and lateral rods coaxial with the wheels . The format was adopted and was collectively called "SPORTEC-SUS".
The North American specification has an ultra-low fuel consumption specification "CIVIC CRX HF" (1.3L engine) that makes use of its lightness, 50MPG (24.8km / L) in city mode, 56MPG (27.8km / L) in highway mode. In terms of fuel efficiency, it was the No. 1 low fuel consumption model at the time.
On November 1 , 1984 , "Si" equipped with a new 1.6L ZC type engine was added . The swing arm type valve drive was used in some cases at the time for the purpose of facilitating valve clearance adjustment, but in the case of the ZC model, the main purpose was to increase the lift. This attempt will be used in the later " VTEC ". The cylinder block uses a bore-up version of the "1.5i" full Siamese block, with a long stroke of 75mm x 90mm .
Along with the increase in engine output, an equal length drive shaft was newly adopted in the drive system to prevent torque steer peculiar to FF, but the brake configuration was "1.5i" due to the lightweight vehicle weight and short wheelbase. The same front wheel ventilated disc and rear wheel leading trailing were followed (the front brake pad was changed to semi-metal). Unlike the "1.5i", the "Si" had aluminium wheels as standard, but power steering was not equipped, and air conditioning and audio were optional. As for the exterior, a urethane rear spoiler was standard equipment, the stabilizer was strengthened, an oil cooler was added, and in order to accommodate two large-diameter cam pulleys on the bonnet, a "power bulge" was installed following the S800 and City Turbo . Added a sportier impression. On the other hand, the vehicle weight increased to 860kg.
A minor change was made in September 1985 , and the headlights were changed from the semi- retractable headlights to the same fixed type as the export specification "CIVIC CRX". In addition to changing the interior and meter panel of the "Si", the exterior changed the design of the side sills, enlarged the front and rear bumpers, and abolished the two-tone colour. . A model with power steering is now available. Aluminium wheels are optional.
Mugen , which produces aftermarket parts for Honda vehicles , has released blister-shaped front and rear fenders, a front mask, a rear spoiler, etc. under the name Mugen CR-X PRO . Used as a marshal car.
The E-AS model name "AS" matches the model’s name AS (Automobile S ports) of the company's 1960s sports car "S series", so some fans say " Honda Sports There was also a movement to accept it as "return".
The total number of new vehicle registrations during the sales period is 40,187
