The Toyota FJ Cruiser is an SUV that Toyota introduced as a concept vehicle at the 2003 Chicago Auto Show and as a production-ready vehicle at the upcoming North American International Auto Show. Since the beginning of 2006, it has been produced as a model year 2007 vehicle.

Its design is reminiscent of the FJ40 from the 1960s - especially the front view and the rear panoramic window. The FJ Cruiser is based on the Land Cruiser Prado and was not originally intended for mass production, but due to the great public interest in the North American International Auto Show, the series was started in early 2006.

All FJ Cruiser built in 2006 were built at Hino Motors in Hamura, Japan. Since 2007, the FJ Cruiser runs in the People's Republic of China from the band and is produced there under the name Guangzhou-Toyota FJ Cruiser.

In June 2016, it was announced that worldwide production of the FJ Cruiser will expire in August 2016.

The base price in the US is between US $ 22,545 and US $ 24,135. Its dimensions are similar to those of the Hyundai Santa Fe and lie between those of the RAV4 with 4600 mm length and Highlander with 4688 mm length.

With the introduction of the FJ Cruiser, the sixth Toyota SUV came to the US - two small (RAV4 and FJ Cruiser), two medium (Highlander and 4Runner) and two large (Sequoia and Land Cruiser). One vehicle per size class is more intended for use on the road, while the other is more suitable for off-road use. The FJ Cruiser is so far the only current model of Toyota, instead of the Toyota emblem the name "Toyota" advertised on the radiator grille, a reference to the old FJ40. The FJ Cruiser is mainly aimed at young buyers who want a sporty vehicle for off-road use.

In Mexico, the sale of the FJ Cruiser began with the 2008 model year.

Toyota FJ Cruiser Service Guide (2006-2022)

Engine

The FJ Cruiser has a 4.0 Liter V-6 engine with two overhead camshafts (DOHC) and variable valve timing (VVTi), type Toyota 1GR-FE, of 239 bhp (176 kW) at 5200 min -1 making and a torque of 377 Nm at 3,700 rpm possesses. These are the same engine as the Tacoma and 4Runner models. For 2010, the use of a dual variable valve timing system (Dual VVTi) is planned, which will give the engine 19 bhp (14 kW) more power and lower fuel consumption.

Transmission

  • Five-speed automatic transmission, type Toyota A750E, in rear-wheel drive models
  • Five-speed automatic transmission, type Toyota A750F with centre differential VF2A, for models with shiftable four- wheel drive
  • Manual 6-speed gearbox, type Toyota RA61F with centre differential VF4B, for models with permanent four-wheel drive

Four-wheel drive

The models with manual transmission have a permanent four-wheel drive. The models with automatic transmission have the simpler, switchable four-wheel drive, which should be switched on only on slippery surfaces, so that it is not damaged by tension.

Suspension

The front wheels are hung on high, double wishbones and are additionally connected by a stabilizer. The rear axle has four handlebars and coil springs, as well as a stabilizer. The Land Cruiser Prado 120 series have the same suspension.

Brakes

The FJ Cruiser has all around ventilated disc brakes - front with 4 pistons, rear with 2 pistons - which are controlled by a brake booster. It is equipped with ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BAS), Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC).

Bodywork

The body of the FJ Cruiser has rear doors that give it its own style. Its short wheelbase, separate frame and grille-headlight arrangement are reminiscent of the old FJ40. The windscreen is almost vertical and has three windscreen wipers, which ensure the widest possible field of vision. The construction with a separate frame is based on the chassis of the Hilux. Due to cracks and deformations on the front interior fenders on the 2007 and early 2008 models, the engine compartment has been modified.

In 2008, the FJ Cruiser was little changed. There were three new colours: Brick (dark red), Sandstorm (beige) and Iceberg (white). Even the car painted in "Iceberg" has a white roof. The colour Black Cherry Pearl (dark red) was no longer available.

All models are equipped with side airbags mounted in the front seat backrests, as well as front and rear curtain airbags that respond to vehicle rollover. Immobilizer, a rear window wiper / washer, side sun visors for the front seats, a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and a remote control built into the key.

The "B package" has been renamed "Off-Road Package" and now includes tires in size P 265/75 R 16 BFG on alloy wheels and Bilstein shock absorbers. Also, the temperature / compass / tilt display screen previously included in the "C package" is now included there. In the US models, the roof rail is no longer standard, but is only available as a dealer extra. In Canada, the roof rail is still included in the standard. The other features of the "B package" of 2007 remained unchanged.

The "C package" available in Canada now includes a subwoofer to the  Audio System, which did not exist in 2007 in Canada.
