The Tacoma offers four-cylinder and V6 engines, 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains, and the popular PreRunner models that combine the 4x2 drivetrain with the 4x4's raised riding stance and styling. Leading the Tacoma line in performance and style, the unique X-Runner model blends concept-truck design with sports car performance from a 236-horsepower V6 engine and a specially tuned chassis.
The Tacoma line offers 18 different model configurations based on three cab types: Regular Cab, Access Cab, and the four-door Double Cab. The Tacoma Regular Cab and Access Cab models feature a 73.5-inch-long bed. The Double Cab is available with a choice of a 60.3-inch bed or the 73.5-inch bed.

At the 2004 Chicago Auto Show , Toyota showed a bigger and stronger Tacoma. This car came in 18 different configurations, including three cab variants, four gearbox variants, two engine variants and two platform lengths. A 4.0-liter V6 engine, Toyota 1GR-FE type, took the place of the old 3.4L. The new V6 models offered many improvements. B. a trailer load of 2950 kg and a payload of 750 kg. The new engine produced 236 hp (176 kW) and had a torque of 361 Nm. The small, all-new 2.7-liter R4 engine was rated at 159 hp (119 kW) and had a torque of 244 Nm. The empty weight is 1429-1756 kg.

Toyota Tacoma Technical details 2nd Gen (2004-2015)

Toyota also introduced the X-Runner equipment , which replaced the poorly saleable S-Runner equipment of its predecessor. The X-Runner was delivered with the V6 engine in conjunction with a manual six-speed gearbox, 18 "alloy wheels, a lowered by 50 mm suspension and an X-Brace suspension package. Toyota also added a Downhill Assistant (DAC) and Hill Start Assist (HAC) for models equipped with the TRD package. Upon request, fully or partially lockable differentials were available. All Tacoma had four mounting rails, lashing hooks, charging boxes and - if a TRD package was ordered - a power socket on the bed. The mounting rails held loads up to 100 kg.

The Tacoma's composite inner bed is made from a sheet-molded compound (SMC) deck and walls that are 10 percent lighter than steel, yet tough and durable. The bed deck features two-tier loading and integrated deck rail utility that includes four standard adjustable tie-down cleats. The rails are compatible with Genuine Toyota Accessories, including cargo bed cross bars, a fork-mount bike rack, and diamond-plate storage boxes. An available 1 15V/400W powerpoint further extends the bed's utility. Dual rear access doors on the Tacoma Access Cab models open to 80 degrees to give passengers easy ingress and egress. Interior storage has been maximized in Access Cab models with tumble-flat rear seats and underseat storage. Double Cab models feature additional storage behind the rear seatback. On all models with front bucket seats (except the sport seats), the front passenger seat folds flat and integrates into a tray table.

Toyota Tacoma specifications 2nd Gen (2004-2015)

The Tacoma interior provides durability and comfort with high-grade fabric and generous standard equipment. Sound absorption material in the headliner
and behind the rear seats and insulating carpeting help to provide a quiet cabin. Exterior aerodynamic details help reduce wind noise. A three-pod instrument gauge panel lends a sporty look in all models. The center console (standard on Access Cab and Double Cab models; available with bucket seats on Regular Cab models) flows into the instrument panel for a unified appearance. The console integrates three cupholders, two of which can
accommodate extra-large containers.

The 2006 model differed slightly from the 2005 model. Some of the previously available only on request equipment details have now been delivered as standard. For the 2007 model, there were two new interior colours; In 2008, no changes were introduced. The 2009 model had more safety details and the mechanical partially lockable differential was no longer available. Only the TRD models still had a fully lockable differential. The second-generation Tacoma will be built in Tijuana, Baja California and Freemont, California . The plastic bunks are all built in Mexico .

In Canada , the 2009 Tacoma got a new 6-disc CD changer, new pitman arm and a new stability program (VSC).

Safety and structural stiffness

Safety First with Dynamic Control + Occupant Protection Tacoma offers some of the most sophisticated dynamic control technology. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution(EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) are standard on all models, and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) is available for all models. EBD optimizes brake pressure at each wheel independently for greater control under braking, especially when cornering. Brake Assist is designed to determine if the driver is attempting emergency braking. If the driver has not pressed firmly enough on the brake pedal to engage the ABS, the system supplements the applied braking power until pedal pressure is released. The optional VSC system, which integrates traction control (T RAC),
enhances traction on or off-road by helping to keep the vehicle going on its intended course. VSC detects front-wheel slide and rear-wheel slide during
cornering and attempts to control either condition with throttle intervention and/or by braking individual wheels.

The Tacoma comes standard with ABS , Brake Assist (BAS) and Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD). In model year 2008, a rollover sensor was added, which triggers the side airbags - if any - during rollover. Since the 2009 model year, all Tacoma have Toyota's Star Safety System with Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC). Side airbags in the front and curtain airbags for the two rear rows of seats are also supplied as standard, as are active headrests.

The smaller pickups, like the Tacoma, generally do not perform as well in crash tests as the larger pickups. In a test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) with Tacoma and its competitors, Tacoma, equipped with side airbags, achieved the best score "good" in the side impact test. The Tacoma was also rated "good" in frontal impact.  2009, the Tacoma even won the Top Safety Pick of the IIHS with the active headrests .

Special equipment of the X-Runner

Toyota Tacoma Maintenance Guide 2nd Gen (2004-2015)

The Toyota X-Runner is a limited special edition. It is available in three exterior colours per year, in total in four exterior colours. From 2005 to 2008 the X-Runner was available in Speedway Blue (blue), Radiant Red (red) and Black Sand Pearl (black). In 2009, Radiant Red dropped out and was replaced by Barcelona Red Metallic.

The main differences between the X-Runner and the other equipment variants concern the chassis and the rigidity of the frame. Toyota installed an X-beam in the back of the frame to reinforce it (hence the name X-Runner). In addition, the frame was reinforced by two other cross members.

On request, there is a larger brake kit (BBK) from TRD, which consists of brake discs with 332 mm diameter and callipers with four pliers. The BBK package (Big Brake Kit) was designed by Stop Tech .

Sales in the US

Sales of Tacoma in the US have been steadily increasing in recent years. In 2004, they missed those of the market leader in this segment, the Ford Ranger 2.2%, a year later, the Tacoma in this segment with almost 40% and in 2006 he was able to expand its market leadership to 93%. Toyota sells about 190,000 Tacoma annually. In 2005, Toyota sold 189,987 Tacoma, more than any other small pickup in the US sold. Thus, the Tacoma reaches about 10% of all Toyota sales in the US. From March 2006 to March 2007, sales of the Tacoma increased regularly. In March 2006, Toyota sold 9,185 Tacoma, compared to 10,851 in March 2007. In the summer of 2007 Toyota broke all records and sold over 60,000 Tacoma in 3 months. From August 2006 to the end of 2008, sales increased by 7.6%. The US economic crisis did not leave its mark on the Tacoma either. In 2008, so few Tacoma were sold as never before.
