In September 1979, the fourth version of the Corolla came on the market, again as a sedan, coupe, station wagon, liftback and derived from the liftback hardtop coupe. The wheelbase grew by 30 to 2400 mm, in Japan, the engine sizes were 1.3, 1.5, 1.6 and 1.8 liters (74-115 hp / 54-84.5 kW).

Various facelifts were made during the production The biggest change on the E70 except the more modern, angular body was the replacement of the leaf springs of the rear rigid axle by trailing arm, Panhard rod and coil springs ; the station wagon kept the leaf spring axis. The two- and four-door sedan, the five-door station wagon and the liftback coupe were offered from the fall of 1979, the latter as 1300 DX (44 kW / 60 hp) and 1600 (54-81 kW / 74-110 hp), the other variants only with 1.3-liter four-cylinder, whose performance was increased in 1982 to 48 kW / 65 hp.

In the fall of 1981, the Corolla series was revised and received modified headlights and tail lights.

From August 1982, the base 1.6-liter was also available in the sedan, from February 1983, there was also a 1.8-liter diesel engine (43 kW / 58 hp).

The versions sedan, liftback, coupe and Hardtop coupé were replaced in May 1983 by the front-wheel drive E80 series. The rear wheel drive wagon was produced in revised form until August 1987.
