In early 1997, versions of the same car were again offered with Century and Regal as a four-door sedan based on a revised GM-W platform, which was also used for the models Oldsmobile Intrigue, Pontiac Grand Prix and Chevrolet Impala.
The car was a bit longer than the Century, the other differences were mostly cosmetic. As a luxury version of the Regal offered larger engines and better equipment, and this had a newer version of the 3.8 -Liter V6. While the Century was primarily a dependable American average vehicle, the Regal had amenities such as heated leather seats, a sound system with eight Monsoon speakers, separate climate control for the driver and front passenger, and more interior space. There were only a few changes in the seven-year term of this model.
- Performance: 3.8 -Liter V6.
- Top speed (reduced) 195 km/h 121 mph
- top speed at 1000/min in 4th gear 57.9 km/h
- weight/power ratio 10.9 kg/kW (8 kg/hp)
- EPA fuel consumption 7.8/12.4 L/100 km.
- 145 kW (197 hp) at 5200 rpm, 38.2 kW/L (52 hp/L); 298 Nm (30.4 mkp) at 4000 rpm
During this period, the fastest Buick has been since the days of the Grand National's Regal GS. This car did not have a turbo engine, but the engine was supercharged by a compressor and performed 240 hp with a torque of 380 Nm. The car gained a good reputation among drivers who prefer so-called "Sleeper" cars; Vehicles that have a higher performance than the appearance initially suggests.Regal is offered in LS and uplevel GS models. The LS has a 200-horsepower V6, the GS adds a supercharger for 240 hp. Automatic transmission, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, and traction control are standard. A firmer Gran Touring suspension with 16-inch wheels in place of 15s is standard on GS and optional on LS. A side airbag for the driver is standard on GS and included with optional leather upholstery on the LS; leather upholstery is standard on the GS. A split folding rear seatback is standard on both models.
The Olympic editions (shown above) come in LS and GS form and add special gold, silver, or graphite paint with a lighter lower body color, plus taupe leather interior, USA Olympic insignia, and the Gran Touring suspension. The Olympic cars' look is by clothing designer Joseph Abboud.
When the car was introduced in early 1997, Buick praised it as a vehicle for the "supercharged family". Buick offered two more versions, the LSE and the GSE. The LSE had the 200-horsepower engine with some improvements, and the GSE had the supercharged 240-horsepower engine and some changes as well. In 2000, Buick launched a concept car called the GNX with a 3.8-l V6 intercooled engine, and this car also had a supercharger instead of a turbocharger. It had 300 hp instead of the 276 hp of the original.
Regal LS and GS Performance
The standard LS rack handled the quarter mile in 15.8 s and accelerated from 0 to 100 km / h in 8 s. The loaded Regal GS needed 14.7 s for the quarter mile and reached an acceleration of 0 to 100 km / h in 6.6 s. The shelf GS with the 3.8-liter V6 compressor machine (L67) afforded 240 horsepower and torque of 380 Nm. The Regal GS drive was programmed to engage a torque limiter to reduce wheel spin when starting. If one dubbed this program by appropriate chips from the accessory trade, then the torque rose to 410 Nm.
- 179 kW (243 hp) 5200/min, 47.2 kW/L (64.2 h/L)
- Top speed 220 km/h 136 mph
Regal GSX (SLP Performance)
At Buick dealers, the GSX-SLP performance package was available for the Regal GS. This package included new "GSX" emblems that could be exchanged for the "GS" emblems, a dual exhaust, an improved cold air intake system, a smaller compressor pulley, a power chip, and wider rims and tires. This was able to achieve an output of up to 270 hp and a torque of 423 Nm.

Assembly in China
All Buick Regal were in Oshawa assembly plant in Canada's Ontario built. The shelf was the fourth GM model that was also assembled in the People's Republic of China by GM Shanghai. The assembly began on December 26, 2002, after the assembly of the Century, the GL8 van and the Sail had already started there.
The shelf, as a large, relatively luxurious model, achieved sizeable sales in this market, although it was more expensive than the US version. He replaced the Century in Buick's Chinese model range and differs from the US model with a slightly different front end. The range of engines also differs from the American model: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder or a 2.5-liter V6 drive the Chinese Regal model.
The last Buick Regal of the model year 2004 left the assembly lines in the USA on June 1, 2004. The US version was replaced in mid-2004 by the Buick Lacrosse, although the Lacrosse is also still based on the GM-W platform.
