End of 1991, the Eldorado was after a delay because Cadillac initially with the external design (for a show in the model year 1991) are not satisfied, appeared as a completely new model that technically strong at the Cadillac Seville leaned and its stressed-edged style, in particular around the C-pillar, recalled memories of the first front-wheel drive coupe from 1966. The formal, public presentation of the production model took place at NAIAS in January 1992.
It was powered in the first year by the 4.9-liter V8 engine (149 kW / 203 hp) taken over from its predecessor, and then by the new Cadillac NorthStar V8 engine in two different power levels: 201 kW (273 DIN hp) for the base model, 216 kW (294 hp) for the Eldorado Touring Coupé and the Eldorado Sport Coupe (available only in 1993).new engine and suspension, while all models add a passenger-side air bag to complement their driver's bag. Speed-sensitive steering is newly standard and the rear suspension is reworked. The Eldorado coupe rides a 3-inch shorter wheelbase than the Seville sedan. Standard is a 200-horsepower 4.9-liter V-8, but the Touring Coupe now come with the 295-horsepower Northstar V-8,a twin-cam 32-valve, 4.6-liter engine shared with the 2-seat Allante. A new automatic transmission designed for the Northstar electronically programs its shifts to the driver's style. Other Touring Coupe features: traction control and a computer-controlled Road Sensing Suspension (RSS), which "reads" the road surface and automatically adjusts ride firmness within milliseconds. Base models get a simpler Speed Sensitive Suspension.
Anti-lock brakes are standard. A new Sport Performance Package bridges the gap between the base Eldorado and Touring Coupe. Its "retuned" Northstar V-8 makes 25 fewer horsepower, but 10 more pounds/feet of torque. . The ETC also has Cadillac's Continuously Variable Road-Sensing Suspension. Standard on the ETC and optional on the base
model is StabiliTrak, which is designed to selectively apply the front brakes to maintain control in fast turns.
In the autumn of 1995, a visual and technical revision was made to the Eldorado. Here, the NorthStar engine strengthened to 205 kW (279 hp) and 224 kW (305 hp).
Eighth-generation Eldorado sales reached over 31,000 units in the first year, then declined to around 15,000 to 25,000 units per year, with a further downward trend.
