Chevrolet presented the Chevrolet Cavalier 1st generation In May 1981.

History

Introduced on May 21, 1981 , the new front-drive four-passenger Chevrolet was described as subcompact on the with standard equipment, including radio, power brakes, reclining bucket seats, stabilizer bar, and remote trunk/hatch/tailgate release.The Chevrolet Cavalier 1st generation. was built on the GM-J platform , the technically and visually closely related to the Europe made Opel Ascona C and Vauxhall Cavalier MK2 (1981-1988) the first generation with 1.8-liter carburetor engine and front-wheel drive as a four-door sedan, Saloon coupe, hatchback with hatchback and five-door station wagon.

The Chevrolet Cavalier is a manufactured from spring 1981 .With a length of just under 4.40 meters, the Cavalier was quite compact for US conditions. The equipment levels ranged from the entry level Cadet on the basic Cavalier to the top model CL. The standard consumption of the engine with the maximum power of 65 kW (89 hp) is 7.9 liters per 100 kilometers.The Cavalier CL added power steering, AM/ FM radio, whitewall tires, sport wheel covers, sport mirrors (the left as remote), tinted glass, rear stabilizer bar,
gauges, intermittent wipers, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and halogen headlamps. CL hatchbacks also had a dash tachometer and rear wiper/ washer as standard. 

The first series Cavaliers have a low, horizontal-style grille with recessed rectangular headlampsat the front and Taillamps were split into two horizontal sections and body-color wraparound bumper end caps with black black wipers and mirror trim .Four models were Offered: two- door and four-door sedans, two-door hatchback, and four-door Wagon. Cavaliers came in three series: low-budget Cadet, base, and CL.BODY saloon/sedan, 4 doors - coupé, 2 doors - hatchback coupé, 2+1 doors - estate car/st. wagon, 4+1 doors; 4 seats.separate front seats, built-in headrests, reclining backrests; heated rear window. As 4-dr Sedan,2-dr Coupé,2+1-dr Hatchback Coupé,4+1-dr Wagon the 'Cavalier' nameplates were on front fenders.

The Cavalier Z24 teams the 2.8 liter Multi-port Fuel Injected V6 with a 4-speed manual, 14-inch wheels, 14-inch Eagle GT radials,
"Star Wars" instrumentation and a special sports package with ground effects molded in the Camaro Z28 image to boost Cavalier into the world of high performance.The Z24 was available as either a 2-door coupe or 2-door hatchback.

Optional
Turbo-Hydramatic 125C automatic transmission, hydraulic torque converter and planetary gears with 3 ratios (l 2-840, 11 1.600, Ill 1, rev 2.070), 2.840 axle ratio 3.650 axle ratio; disc brakes with internal radial fins; power steering; air-conditioning; electric windows; electric front seats; detachable sunroof; rear wiper-washer; heavy-duty suspension; speed control.

Body color options were at first white, black, light yellow, beige and red; plus metallic silver, light or dark blue, bright blue, light or dark Jade, gold, maroon, or charcoal.

Chevrolet Cavalier 1st generation changes

  • 1983: Deletion of Cadet and basic hatchback coupe, consistently stripped down equipment and lower prices, equipment designations: Basis / CL / CS. Five-speed gearbox for an additional charge. New two-liter engine with intake manifold injection and also 65 kW, but more torque, replaces 1.8-liter engine. January 1983: Introduction of the Cavalier Convertible (Cabriolet).
  • 1984: New front end with double headlights. Elimination of staged and hatchback coupe in basic and CS equipment, equipment levels now: Base / CS / Type 10 (new, only as a two- and three-door coupe and convertible).
  • 1985: At extra charge in all models 2.8-liter V6 engine with injection and 93 kW (127 hp).

Entertainment options: AM radio: base ($112). Electronic-tuning seek/scan AM/ FM stereo radio ($158) exc. base ($258);w/ clock ($197) exc. base ($297); w/cassette ($319) exc. base ($419). Electronic-tuning AM stereo/ FM seek/ scan radio w/cassette, equalizer and clock($494-$504) exc. base ($594). Premium dual rear speakers ($25). Extended-range sound system: RS/Z24/conv. ($35). Fixed-mast antenna: base ($41) but incl.w/radios. Radio delete ($56 credit).

  • Fuel consumption: 21.5 m/imp gal, 18 m/US gal, 13.1 Ix 100 km.

1986: New sports version Z24 as two- or three-door coupe with injected high-output 2.8-liter V6 engine and 90 kW (122 hp). Equipment levels Base, CS, RS (replaces Type 10) and Z24.1987: On request Getrag five-speed gearbox. Four-cylinder with electronic ignition and now 66 kW (90 hp). V6 engine with aluminum cylinder heads now produces 93 kW and in the Z24 97 kW (132 hp).

The Cavalier of the first generation produced a total of 3.71 million copies, including 76,000 convertibles up to 1987.
