The Chevrolet Vega was offered by the American car manufacturer General Motors from 1970 to 1977.

History

In September 1970 Chevrolet presented the rear-wheel drive Vega as the first compact car of the brand. The Vega aimed at the customers of European and Japanese import cars and competed against Ford Pinto and AMC Gremlin .

Features of the Vega was the 2.3-liter, unusually designed four-cylinder engine with die-cast crankcase without linersMade of aluminum-silicon alloy and overhead camshaft in gray cast iron cylinder head. Initially, he ran very rough and consumed relatively much. Offered were a two-door notchback coupe, a three-door hatchback coupe with large tailgate and a three-door station wagon. In 1973, the output of the base engine of 81 hp (60 kW) was reduced to 73 hp (54 kW), at the same time a dual carburetor version was taken into the program, which made 86 hp (63 kW). For the 1974 model year, the car got a modified grille and much more robust, according to the recent US regulations applicable bumpers. In 1975, the engine output increased slightly, to 79/88 hp (58/65 kW). The following year, it was lowered to 71/85 hp (52 / 62.5 kW).

PERFORMANCE 2.3-liter

max torque (SAE): 136 1b ft, 18.7 kg m at 2,400 rpm

specific power: 39.2 hp/l
max speed: about 88 mph, 141 km/h
power-weight ratio: sedan 24.5 lb/hp, 11.4 kg;'hp —lb/hp, 11.3 kg/hp
speed in direct drive at 1,000 rpm: 20 mph, 32.2 km/h
fuel consumption: 21.6 m/ imp gal, 18 m/US gal, 13.1 1 x 100 km.

1975/76 was also offered after a long development time already announced in 1971 Vega Cosworth, a sports version of the hatchback coupe with constructed at Cosworth in England two-liter engine with shorter stroke, aluminum cylinder head and 16 valves, the 112 hp (82 kW) made. The sale of this variant was very sluggish, mainly due to the comparatively high price of $ 6066, twice that of a basic Vega; only 3507 pieces were built.

Chevrolet Vega (1970-1977) history

The innovative thing about the Vega was that it was designed to be transported vertically with the vehicle front down. As a result, more vehicles per area could be shipped on the trains. For example, the batteries had filler caps on the back to prevent leakage during transit. In addition, modifications were made to the engine (special oil baffles) and to the tank (for tank breather). This option was installed as "Vert-A-Pac" from the factory on the appropriate vehicles.

Furthermore, there was from 1970 to 1975 under the name Vega Panel Van a van variant of the station wagon without rear side windows. From this variant, about 22,000 pieces were produced.

Although electric in-tank gasoline pumps were previously used on some Cadillac and Buick models, the H-Platform (Vega and Monza) vehicles were GM's first large volume models with such gasoline pumps. Today, this is standard on all popular cars with intake manifold injection .fuel tank capacity: 9.2 imp gal, 11 US gal, 42 l.

In 1977, the production of Vega was stopped after a total of 1,955,769 copies. The station wagon was included in the program of the technically closely related to the Vega Chevrolet Monza .
