The Corvette C8 is the eighth model generation of a sports car from the American automotive group General Motors .Built from the end of 2019.

History

The Corvette C8  is the first generation of the Corvette with a mid-engine positioned in front of the rear axle. As the first generation of the Corvette, it is also to be built at the factory as a right-hand drive variant. .After the engine has been installed since the Corvette C2 over six generations as a front mid-engine , ie in the front of the vehicle behind the front axle, the manufacturer switched the engine mounting position of the new-generation model to a center-mounted in front of the rear axle and behind the driver. Decades before  GM dealt with this concept for a sports car.

On July 18, 2019 GM presented the coupe variant in Tustin , Orange County , California .The vehicle was presented to the public for the first time on a larger scale the end of July 2019 the Concours d'Elegance of America in Plymouth , the US state of Michigan . Since the end of August 2019 at the National Corvette Museum a manufactured 2018 prototype vehicle. Originally, it was assumed that an earlier premiere in 2019, According to insiders, but was delayed by technical problems.

From convertibles during the performance of the coupe first images were shown formal but it was only on October 2, 2019 media representatives and the following day the general public in the Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Iceland , the US state of Florida presented. The Motorsport Version Corvette C8.R that for the class GTE should participate was shown as part of the same event.

Like the previous model generations, the vehicle is manufactured at the GM Bowling Green plant in Kentucky . 400 additional employees were hired and a second production shift introduced. From August 2019 it was assumed that the production of the coupe will begin in early December 2019 and first vehicle deliveries were expected from February 2020.

The design of the vehicle is based on aircraft, according to Kirk Bennion, a bodywork design manager. Tristan Murphy was responsible for the interior. It has a driver-oriented dashboard, which is divided into the three areas controls for the driver, the infotainment screen and, arranged along a line next to the passenger air conditioning controls, designed.

The Corvette will be available in three trim levels: 1LT, 2LT and 3LT. All models come standard with dual-zone climate control, a 12 "diagonal dashboard as an instrument cluster , an 8 " touch screen for operating the infotainment system, and an electrically adjustable steering wheel. With the equipment variant 2LT and 3LT there are additional equipment details as a supplement. With the Z51 equipment code, two performance packages will be available that differ in terms of chassis tuning and equipment. For the body 12 shades are offered; in the interior there are more than four colors for the upholstery and six contrasting colors z. B. for the safety belts.

The vehicle has a skeleton body . Their main material is aluminum , but some components are made of steel , magnesium or carbon fiber reinforced plastic . Most components are riveted together and bolted, only a small proportion is welded. parts in the region of the front and rear wheel suspensions are of aluminum die cast . However, other sections, such as the center tunnels, are being extruded to increase stability .Insiders guessed at the beginning of the year 2019 problems with the body and bursting engine covers / rear windows, due to the high engine power of the vehicle, which should have delayed the vehicle premiere.Because of the motor means has the Corvette C8 two luggage compartments, one front and one rear. In the back there should be enough space for two golf bags.  Alternatively, the Targa roof of coupes can be stowed in the rear luggage compartment. The convertible top is electrically powered. It can be stored behind the driver within 16 seconds. The vehicle idle mass increases in this body variant compared to the coupe by about 40 kg.

Corvette C8

The vehicle is controlled by a eight-cylinder - Otto engine in V-type driven. In the Stingray model variant, the LT2 engine has a displacement of 6162 cc, with a 103.25 mm stroke and 92 mm bore. The small block having cylinder liners made of cast iron and the cylinder heads are cast from alloyed with silicon and copper-aluminum (A319-T7). The compression ratio is 11.5: 1. For the change of charge , each cylinder has an intake valve and a sodium filled exhaust valve in the cylinder head ; The total of 16 valves are over by a centrally located between the cylinder banks camshaft Tappet , bumpers and rocker arms operated. The engine timing can be shifted with a phasing on the camshaft. The lubrication works with dry sump and three oil pumps. Using the direct fuel is introduced to the fuel into the cylinders. At partial load, the supply of cylinders 2, 3, 5 and 8 (after GM numbering) can be switched off. The motor heat is four coolers are submitted by those two behind the front bumper and two in the air intakes behind the doors are to the environment.

The only available gearbox is an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox with transmission code M1L. It was developed by GM in collaboration with Tremec . It is switched via an electronically connected to the gear selector or paddles behind the steering wheel. This is due to the vehicle structure and the unpopularity of manual transmissions.

On both axles, the vehicle has a double wishbone suspension with unequal length control arms at the top and bottom (short / long arm double wishbone). The control arms are made of aluminum; the lower ones are cast and the upper ones are forged. As standard, the car has a single-pipe damper with a diameter of 46 mm. For an additional charge, it can be adjusted magnetorheologically . The rack and pinion steering supplied by Bosch and ZF is electromechanically servo-assisted .

The vehicle is equipped with a brake-by-wire system. This should be adjustable by the driver, the characteristic of the brake system.  At the front the vehicle has two-piece four-piston brake calipers with brake discs, the standard have a diameter of 321 mm, and on the rear axle as well as four-piston brake calipers, but which are made of one piece (monobloc), with 339 mm brake discs.
