In the fall of 1990 was first introduced after15 years a new version of the Caprice. Its design was due to the great success of the Ford Taurus, but was never properly accepted. Only the station wagon kept the same wing until the end of production. A first revision the vehicle existed for the model year 1993.
The Caprice was also popular because of its robustness as a taxi and not least with the authorities; the model of the years between 1994 and 1996 is considered one of the best police vehicles ever made. The sports version of this Caprice is called " Impala SS" (for S upper S port), has a V8 engine with the type designation LT1 which was also used in the Corvette C4 and a maximum power of 194 kW (264 hp), was initially only in Black available. In addition, there was a modified grille, 17-inch wheels and Impala emblems. This model is still sought after, which is reflected among other things in the value stability.
The Caprice also found its customers in the private sector, as a wagon, in which eight people can sit, the Caprice was ideal not only for the American large family. The sedan (sedan) is enough to transport six people.
At year-end 1996 ended the production of this model series in the United States for over 30 years and 4.35 million copies produced. General Motors needed the factory in Arlington, Texas, to create new capacity for the looming SUV boom. Along with the Caprice were also all other identical models, such as the Buick Roadmaster, the Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham and the Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser affected. Today, the full-size SUVs (Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe) are still manufactured in Arlington.
