With the 7th generation of Suburban was a 5-door SUV Suburbans comfortably sat nine adults. Chevolet Suburbans were large station wagons built on a light—duty truck chassis. They were manufactured in the General Motors assembly plant at Flint, Michigan. The Suburban's Standard engine was the 5.7-liter EFI V4. Optional was a 7.4-liter V-8 engine ,The body shape with rounded lines was built for 19 years almost unchanged. There were versions with rear-wheel drive (C) or four-wheel drive (K), those with 0.5 to. Payload and those with 0.75 to. (Designation "10" and "20" at Chevrolet, respectively "1500" and "2500" at GMC). The monotone was GMC "C30 / K30", Chevrolet "3500".
The Suburban of the 1973 model year now had on both sides two doors (the previous generations each had only one door on the driver's side) an air conditioning for the front and middle row of seats, a luggage rack, a heater under the third row of seats and treads for easier entry. If desired, the rear differential was provided with an automatic lock.
Base engine was the Chevrolet small block V8 engine with 4998 cc displacement. V8 engines with 5735 cc or 6555 cc displacement were available. For the first time there was also the Chevrolet Big Block V8 engine with 7440 cc. From 1982, the Detroit diesel V8 engine with 6211 cc and 97 kW power was to order. The diesel engine later became the most popular engine for the exported to Europe Suburban.
The three-stage automatic transmission Turbo-Hydra-Matic 350 was only available for the small-block engines. The Turbo-Hydra-Matic 400 was used for the big-block engine and the diesel engine. In 1981, the four-speed automatic transmission Turbo-Hydra-Matic 700R4 was introduced for all small-block engines and the diesel engine. There were also packages with reduced axle ratios and additional coolers for heavy loads.
As equipment lines there was the basic equipment and the better Silverado equipment. On request, there was a third row of seats, so that 9 people could be carried. There was also a rear heater as an option.
From 1981, there were automatically lockable hubs for the front axle, so that the four-wheel drive could be switched on while driving, and the NP-208 differential was replaced in most models by the type NP-205.
1984 there was behind asbestos brake pads and 1985 a new grille. 1985, a total of 64,670 Suburban emerged.
In 1986 and 1987, the mixture preparation of gasoline engines was switched from carburettor to injection. The GM injection system was called Throttle Body Injection (TBI). In 1990, the Suburban received an ABS for the rear axle and 1991, the heavy-duty automatic transmission GM-4L80 was introduced.
From 1987 to 1991, the earlier Chevrolet C / K models were called R and V respectively. This was done to avoid confusion with the Chevrolet C / K bitters introduced in 1988.
