In May 1977 appeared in Japan the new Datsun violet of the second generation.

The second generation which broke away from the technical base of the Datsun Bluebird. The body line was much more modern and edged designed as the roundish predecessor, the leaf springs on the rear axle gave way coil springs. 

In Japan, there was a four-door notchback sedan, a three-door hatchback coupe and a combination with engines from 1.4 to 2.0 liters.

From 1980, the five-door hatchback from the program of virtually identical sister model Datsun Stanza was taken.sedan and coupe were again offered from March 1978 under the name Datsun 160J / 160J SSS Coupe, later as Datsun Violet. In the sedan made the 1.6-liter four-cylinder 61 kW / 83 hp, in the coupe 65 kW / 89 hp.
