The Ferrari 225 S is a sports car produced by the Italian car manufacturer Ferrari in 1952 with 21 cars built , which participated in various car competitions  .

History

From 225S emerged in 1952 a total of 12 Spider and 7 coupes with Vignale body (designed by Giovanni Michelotti ), a Barchetta with Touring body and about two other vehicles of unknown construction.Successor of the 225S was the 250 S.

The model was launched at a time when the V12 engines of Gioachino Colombo and Aurelio Lampredi were in full evolution . The one from Colombo was fitted to the 225 S, although some innovations derived from the development of the Lampredi engine, such as the new fuel lines , valve control and the camshaft with roller tappets. Two two-seater prototypes were built , a barchetta and a coupé , both by Vignale. His heirs were the Ferrari 250 GT and the Ferrari 250 MM .The chassis of some specimens were built by Gilco , and were called Tuboscocca . The bodies were instead of Vignale and Touring .

The 225S corresponded with box frame, front double wishbones, a rear rigid axle and drum brakes around the other contemporary Ferrari models. The frame was tubular steel . The bodywork was a berlinetta or 2-seater spider  . The front suspensions were independent, with transverse wishbones and transverse leaf springs , while the rear ones consisted of a rigid bridge and double longitudinal semi-elliptical leaf springs. Both were fitted with hydraulic shock absorbers. The brakes were drum brakes , while the gearbox was five-speed plus reverse. The steering was worm screw  .

The engine was a front and longitudinal 60 ° V12 with 2715.46 cm³ of displacement . The bore and stroke were 70mm and 58.8mm respectively , while the compression ratio was 8.5: 1. The maximum power delivered by the engine was 210 hp at 7200 rpm .The distribution was single shaft with two valves per cylinder , while the ignition was single with two distributors . The fuel system consisted of three Weber model 36 DCF carburetors . The lubrication was wet sump , while the clutch was single plate type .The maximum speed achieved by the model was 230 km / h

PERFORMANCE
Top speed 230 km/h
Power to weight ratio 4.04 kg/hp
Maximum power 210 hp at 7200 rpm
Specific power 77.3 litre

The 225 S was driven by  Piero Taruffi , Giannino Marzotto , Luigi Villoresi , Eugenio Castellotti and Pierre Pagnibon  .

The 225 S debuted at the Giro di Sicilia in 1952 driven by Piero Taruffi and Mario Vandelli . During this competition, the model dominated the race, but a broken cylinder head gasket compromised the outcome of the competition . He also participated in the Mille Miglia and the Targa Florio  .One of the most important achievements of the model was the 1952 Monaco Grand Prix , where three 225 S finished in the top three. However, it was beaten at the Mille Miglia of the same year, where seven 225 Ss did not have the better of the more powerful 340 MM and the only 250 S in the race. The other competition in which the 225 S established itself was the 1955 Cuban Grand Prix .
