 Fiat Sofim Engine Explained

The Sofim - Società Franco Italiana Motori was originally joint diesel engine enterprise of Fiat, Saviem (Renault) and Alfa Romeo established in 13 September 1974 and was bought by Iveco in 1981.  The manufacturing plant is located in Foggia in southern Italy and is nowadays Fiat Powertrain Technologies largest engine plant covering an area of approximately 540,000 square metres (5,800,000 sq ft).

In 1977 was presented the 8140 diesel engine range: a 2.0-liter (1,995 cc) four-cylinder 65 PS (48 kW) and 2.4-liter (2,445 cc) four-cylinder 72 PS (53 kW). These motors were used in light commercial vehicle Saviem SG2, OM Grinta and in the Fiat Daily (Iveco Daily). These engines were used also in Fiat 131 and 132 models.

Today, light trucks Fiat Ducato III and Iveco Daily uses Sofim engine of 2.3 L of 96–116 PS (71–85 kW) and 3.0 L 120–166 PS (88–122 kW). Iveco also provides engines for Fuso, the Asian subsidiary of Daimler AG, a 3.0-liter engines for its light-duty vehicles.

8140 (2.0 liters)

The 8140 was the first version produced since 1977; he delivered with a capacity of 2.0 liters (1995 cc) 44 kW (60 hp) and was used from 1978 in the Fiat 131 CL Diesel 2000. 

8140.x1 (2.4 liters) 

The 8140.x1 has a displacement of 2.4 liters (2445 cc) with a bore of 93 mm and a stroke of 90 mm.

8140.61 / 8144.61 

The 8140.61 / 8144.61 was a naturally aspirated engine from Renault called S8U-730 or S8U-731 in two different versions:

A 49 kW (67 hp) at 3800 min -1 with mechanical vortex chamber injection of Bosch in following cars:

  • Renault Traffic I 2.4 Diesel (1981-1989)
  • Renault Master I B70 (1981-1989)

In 1990, the engine was revised; He now made 51 kW (69 hp) at 3900 min -1 and was given the designation S8U-720 or S8U-722 .

The other version provides 53 kW (72 hp) at 4200 min -1 and a max. Torque of 141 Nm at 2400 min -1 ; It can be found in the following cars:

  • Fiat 132 2500 Diesel (1978-1981)
  • Fiat Argenta Diesel (1981-1985)

8140.21 / 8144.21 

The 8140.21 and 8144.21 are modified versions of the 8140.61 / 8144.61 with turbocharger and direct injection , but without intercooler . The power is 70 kW (95 hp) at 4100 min -1 . Max. Torque 215 Nm at 2200 min -1 . He is - sometimes under the name S8U-750 - in the following cars:

  • Fiat Ducato I 2.5 TD (1981-1989)
  • Iveco Turbodaily I 2.5 (1985-1990)
  • Renault Master I B90 (1986-1990)

8144.81 

A turbo version of the 8140 with swirl chamber injection and 66 kW (90 hp) power was installed from 1983 to 1985 in the Fiat Argenta turbodiesel.

8144.91 

An identical to the 8144.81 engine, but with intercooler and 74 kW (101 hp) power was used in the following vehicles:

  • Fiat Croma 2.4 turbo diesel (1985-1989)
  • Lancia Theme 2.4 Turbodiesel (1984-1988)

8140.x7 (2.5 liters)

The 8140.x7 has an increased stroke of 92 mm and thus a capacity of 2499 cc.

8140.07 

As a naturally aspirated engine with direct injection and 55 kW (75 hp) at 4200 min -1 power, he was installed in:

  • Fiat Ducato I 2.5 D (1989-1994)
  • Zastava Rival 2.5 ID (1988-)
  • Iveco Daily II 2.5 D (1990-1994)
  • Renault Traffic I 2.5 D (1990-1994)
  • Renault Master I 2.5 D S9U (1990-1997)
  • Opel Arena 2.5 D (1997-2001)

A revised version of 59 kW (80 hp) at 4000 min -1 was in Renault Master used 2.5 D (1998-2001) II.

8140.27 

The 8140.27 is the turbo version with direct injection but without intercooler , which replaced the 8140.21 in 1989; the output is 76 kW (103 hp) at 3800 min -1 , the torque of 235 Nm at 2000 min -1 . The 8140.27 can be found in the following cars:

  • Fiat Ducato I 2.5 TD (1989-1994)
  • Fiat Ducato II 2.5 TD (1994-1999)
  • Iveco Turbodaily II 2.5 (1989-1994)

A restricted version with 69 kW (94 hp) at 3800 min -1 was used in the following cars:

  • Renault Traffic I 2.5 TD (1989-1995)
  • Renault Master I 2.5 TD (1989-1997)

8140.47

The 8140.47 is identical to the 8140.27, has direct injection and a charge air cooler and provides 85 kW (116 hp) at 3800 min -1 ; Torque 245 Nm at 2000 min -1 . He was employed in:

  • Fiat Ducato II 2.5 TDI (1994-2002)
  • Iveco Turbo Daily 2.5 TDI (1992-2000)
  • Peugeot Boxer I 2.5 TDI (1994-2002)
  • Citroën Jumper I 2.5 TDI (1994-2002)
  • Renault Master I 2.5 TDI (1994-1997)
  • Opel Movano I 2.5 TDI (1999-2001)
  • Nissan Interstar 2.5 TDI (1999-2001)

8140.47R

The 8140.47R is identical to the 8140.47, but equipped with an oxidation catalyst . He has 80 kW (109 hp) at 3800 min -1 / 256 nm at 2000 min -1 . The engine was installed from 1994 to 2002 in the Fiat Ducato II 2.5 TDI.

8140.67 

The suction version with 62 kW (84 hp) can be found in the Fiat Ducato II 2.5 D (1994-1998).

8144.67 

The 55 kW (75 hp) suction version can be found in the Fiat Ducato I 2.5 D (1989-1994) and the Fiat Croma 2.5 D (1989-1994).

8144.97 

A turbo version with swirl chamber injection , intercooler and 85 kW (116 hp) power was used in the following automobiles:

  • Lancia Thema 2.5 Turbodiesel (1988-1994)
  • Fiat Croma 2.5 turbo diesel (1989-1993)
  • Renault Safrane 2.5 RNdt / RXEdt (1993-1995)

8144.97Y

The 8144.97Y was identical to the 8144.97, but was equipped with electronic regulated injection pump and oxidation catalyst. It was installed in the following vehicles:

  • Fiat Croma 2.5 turbo diesel (1993-1996)

8140.x3 (2.8 liters) 

The 8140.x3 was launched in 1996; with a bore of 94.4 mm and a stroke of 100 mm 2799 cc displacement .

8140.63 

The 8140.63 - a naturally aspirated engine with swirl chamber injection and 64 kW (87 hp) power - was found in the following cars:

  • Fiat Ducato II 2.8 D (1996-2002)
  • Iveco Daily II 2.8 D (1996-1999)
  • Renault Master II 2.8 D (1996-2001)

8140.23

Equivalent to the 8140.43S, but with variable turbine geometry and 107 kW (145 hp) at 3600 rpm -1 / 310Nm at 1500 rpm -1 , the 8140.43N / K engine could be found in:
