The Ford A-Series truck was produced in Langley (Slough) Berkshire (GB) and Cork (Ireland) from 1972 to 1982.
History
Ford's new A-Series closed the gap between the Ford Transit pickup and the mid-size Ford N and D-Series trucks . The permissible total weight ranged from 3.5 to 6.5 tons .
The A-series chassis was particularly popular among camper van makers. Ford mounted the Transit's marginally changed cabs on a standard chassis with stiff axles front and rear. Their pressed sections were sent from the plant and welded in Southampton, lowering production costs. The Essex V4 and V6 petrol engines that came with the car are already tried and true types. The York diesel was also available from the Transit, with a 2.4 litre displacement and a stronger 3.5 litre capacity.
Basically, a 4-speed manual transmission was installed. As extras, a ZF -5-speed manual transmission, sunroof , seat belts , velor pads and a sun visor for the passenger were available. The main market was the United Kingdom, but also on the European continent, the A-series was widespread.
The A-Series was replaced by the Ford Cargo and the Ford Transit III, available with the 1983 facelift with higher payload .
