History
The Ford Model BB truck was developed in the US with only minor modifications a modified front suspension and a more powerful engine - from the previous model Ford Model AA and produced worldwide this had wheelbases of 131.5 or 157 in. The truck has a water-cooled 3.3 liter 4-cylinder petrol in- line engine with 50, later 52 hp and reached at an average consumption of 24 liters of gas per 100 km, a top speed of 75 km / h.The BB was also built as a rare eight cylinder truck option.
The Ford BB was also built pre war in 1932 to 1939 in the Cologne-Niehl plant of the German Ford Motor Company AG. Until 1935 only parts produced elsewhere were here assembled, after the vehicle has been completely produced there, with both flatbed and with box body and a bus. These were available as BB short or BB special with a payload of 1.75 t and short wheelbase (3,340 mm) and BB long with 2.5 t payload and long wheelbase (3,990 mm), reinforced suspension, vacuum Brake booster and reduction gearbox .
The production ran virtually unchanged for seven years: from 1934, the radiator grille of the passenger car models was used. 1937 were further minor modifications, including a more modern cab and the replacement of the curved by a straight headlight suspension in front of the radiator. Meanwhile, the low-priced Ford BB was also exported from Germany to the UK, as many British customers continue to order BB models instead of buying the new, but much more expensive V8 produced there.
The production of the Ford BB in Cologne was at the beginning of the war in 1939 as well as the newer type 817T with V8 engine, since in the A war production version with the name Ford V 3000 S was made especially for the Wehrmacht .Most Ford BB were drafted by the Wehrmacht as part of the material mobilization supplement after the outbreak of war and served on all fronts. Most of the remaining civilian Ford BB were switched to " wood gasifier ". The conversion was carried out at Ford as well as other manufacturers by special on-site workshops.
The Ford BB name was also used after the war on Commercial vehicles.
