History
For model year 1978 Ford USA introduced as the successor of the Ford Maverick the Fairmont on the so-called Fox platform with rear-wheel drive, on which, for example, from the following year produced new Ford Mustang and its successor.
Parallel model of the Ford brand Mercury was the Mercury Zephyr . Offered were atwo or four-door sedan, a five-door station wagon and an initially Fairmont Futura called two-door coupe with independent front end and double rather than single headlights. The modified independent front suspension comprisedof , MacPherson struts, and helical coil springs.
The Ford Fairmont had on the right of the steering wheel, the steering wheel circuit for the automatic and left two steering column switches, the closer to the steering wheel mounted the direction indicator and by pressing in the steering stick operated the horn.
The Engines took over a choice of 2.3-liter four-cylinder with 65 kW (89 hp), a 3.3-liter inline six-cylinder with 63 kW (86 hp) or a 4942 cc and 104 kW (141 hp) V8 , The basic model was added later in the model year, an ES version ("Euro Sport") with matte black grille and trim. Switched by a manual three- or four-speed gearbox or a three-speed automatic transmission. From 1979 on request there was also a four-speed gearbox with overdrive .

From 1980, a Futura variant of the sedan, from 1981 also one for the combined model in the program,, the exterior trim was revised also provided with the dual headlight front end of the coupe. In 1980, the 4.9-liter was replaced by a 4.2-liter V-8 (89 kW / 121 hp). With the model year 1982 accounted for the ES and the estate versions, all Fairmont variants now had the additional designation Futura and had dual headlights. The 4.2-liter V8 accounted for and was reserved also for special police and taxi versions.
In 1983, the Fairmont was discontinued in favor of the Ford Tempo . By then, Ford had sold a total of around 1.6 million from the Fairmont.
