The Ford Maverick is an automobile model from the 1970s, it was manufactured by Ford from 1969 to 1977.

History

Introduced in April 1969 for the 1970 market it was also produced from 1973 to 1979 in Brazil. In the model program, the Maverick came between the later released car Ford Pinto and the model Ford Torino.

The Maverick family initially consisted of the basic model Super, the Super Luxo (SL) and the GT. Super and SL were to buy as a coupe and a four-door. The GT represented the top model and was equipped with the V8, which made 195 gross or 137 net horsepower.First, the Maverick was only available as a two-door hatchback with a rear-wheel drive platform with inline six-cylinders of 2.8 or 3.3 litres displacement; in the summer of 1970, a 4.1-liter inline six-cylinder was added. At first there was the model in only a single variant.

starting in early summer 1970 in a sporty version called Maverick Grabber with trim and rear spoiler. The grabber version was eliminated in the last two model years.Maverick Grabber features a Charblack grille, twin nonfunctional air scoops, reflective tape stripes, racing mirrors and a blackout treatment of the spoiler and rear end.

For model year 1971 came to coupe a four-door sedan on extended wheelbase. The four-door version is seven inches longer than the
original two-door Maverick model and offers substantially increased rear seat roominess. At the same time, the Maverick could now be ordered with a 4.9-liter V8. In model year 1972, Ford also offered the Maverick with Sprint package; this had a special red-white-blue paint and a matching interior decoration. In the summer of 1972, a luxury package was included in the program, which included sports seats with adjustable backrests and imitation leather cover, carpeting, wood foil on the dashboard, radial tires, chrome wheel covers and vinyl roof.

From June 1973, the Maverick was also produced in Brazil in little changed form and was there to compete with midsize cars such as the Chevrolet Opala. However, the Maverick in Brazil was having a hard time, especially after fuel prices rose as a result of the oil crisis - the Maverick was not an economical car. In April 1979, his production was finally stopped, after this sold more and more sluggish.

In the model years 1971 to 1977 Ford's sister brand Mercury offered its own version of the compact car under the name Comet. The vehicles were technically and externally largely identical. The most conspicuous distinguishing feature was the radiator cowling: While the Ford Maverick had a straight, plain grill, the Comet had a protruding grill with a modified bonnet, which took up the at Ford maintained style of the Knudsen grill. The Comet did not reach the production figures of the cheaper Maverick. In seven model years, only 487,182 comets were created, which accounted for less than a quarter of the Maverick production.

From 1973 to 1975, there were minor changes to the Maverick every year. 1973 accounted for the 2.8-liter, making the 3.3-liter to the base drive advanced, also the brakes were improved and the previously chargeable chrome grill was now standard. New extras were stereo radio and alloy wheels. According to the new safety regulations, the Maverick got a stronger front bumper. From model year 1974, a safety bumper was also installed behind. In 1975, only detail changes were made on the Maverick, for example, the Maverick lettering on bonnet and boot lid were replaced by Ford lettering. As early as 1975, the Maverick was to be replaced by the newly introduced Ford Granada, with whom he shares a number of technical components. However, as a result of the oil crisis, the demand for compact cars increased sharply, Ford retained the Maverick for three years next to the Granada in the program. For the 1978 model year, the Maverick was eventually replaced by the Ford Fairmont, which - like many of the group's later mid-range models - was based on Ford's new Fox platform.

In 1975, front disc brakes were standard, plus there was a new entry-level engine, a 2.3-liter four-cylinder with 97 hp; the Willys three litre accounted for. At the same time replaced on all models front seat and steering wheel circuit through individual seats and middle shift lever.

For 1976, the grabber was now no longer available and was replaced by the Maverick stallion with special paint finishes and sporty equipment; The Stallion package was also available for the Pinto and the Ford Mustang II. The Maverick got a new grille and standard front disc brakes; the parking brake was no longer a lever under the dashboard, but a pedal operated.

1977 was the last year for the Maverick in North America. A special police version was introduced, but sold only 400 times. In 1977, the chassis, grille, seats and tail lights were revised, the GT received air scoops on the hood. Air conditioning and automatic transmission were available for the four- as well as for the eight-cylinder versions.

By April 1979, 108,106 Mavericks had been manufactured in Brazil (85,654 coupes, 11,879 four-door and 10,573 GT).
