In autumn 1997, a new generation of the Crown Victoria was introduced. It was based much more on the parallel model Mercury Grand Marquis. For example, the front section with the indicated radiator grille was adopted by the same as the roof with a wider C-pillar. Only for taxi companies and only in the US in 2002 appeared a version with a longer wheelbase. In the middle of 2003, this model generation experienced a facelift.

The model was offered until August 2011 for the police, the fire department and taxi companies and after the recruitment of the Mercury Grand Marquis in a civilian rental car version. In the last model generation, the Crown Victoria has a wheelbase of 2.91 m and a total length of 5.38 m. The Crown Victoria is powered by a 4.6-liter eight-cylinder gasoline engine, which makes depending on the model variant between 224 and 239 hp.

The consumption of civilian models was stated by Ford at between 25 and 17 miles per gallon, which corresponds to 9.4 to 13.8 litres per 100 km.

With closure of the plant in St. Thomas (Ontario) on Lake Erie on 31 August 2011, production of the Panther platform was North America set. There is no direct successor to the Crown Victoria. The next smaller model, the Ford Taurus is thus since then the largest sedan in the North American Ford model range.

Ford Crown Victoria 2nd generation Technical details and specifications (EN114)

For the American police as well as taxi companies, in which the Crown Victoria was very popular, special designs were made with higher performance. In New York, the Crown Victoria in the taxi version with a share of about 90 percent as the last full-size model dominated the cityscape of the metropolis for a long time. Since the end of 2013, a Nissan NV200 taxi version has replaced the Crown Victoria. Key reasons why Crown Victoria continues to be so popular with the police and taxi companies are the above-average reliability and low maintenance costs. Despite recent miserable sales figures in the private sector, the Crown Victoria has received regular awards as "Best Used Car Bet" by various specialist publications.
