The Chevrolet Express and almost identical GMC Savana are vans from General Motors built from the mid 1990s on .

History

From model year 1996 to model year 2002, the GM GMT-600 platform was the basis for the vehicle. The Express and Savana are offered as a Van (Work Van) and as a Kombi (Passenger Van) with 8 to 15 seats. Since 2004 there is ESP (Stabilitrak) in all passenger variants. The express is sold much more than the Savana. The Express and Savana hold 29% of the US pickup truck market in the second quarter of 2018 and are thus in second place behind the Ford Transit . In 2017, a total of 110,017 copies of both vans were sold.

The engines are of a more large-volume compared to to European standards including V8s. The engines were a 4.3-liter V6 gasoline engine with a maximum output of 195  hp (145  kW ), a 5.0-liter V8 gasoline engine with a maximum output of 220 hp (164 kW), a 5.7-liter V8 gasoline engine with a maximum output of 250 hp (186 kW), a 7.4-liter V8 gasoline engine with a maximum output of 290 hp (216 kW) and an indirect-injection , turbocharged 6 , 5 l V8 diesel engine  with a maximum output of 190 hp (142 kW).

Since model year 2003, the vehicle is being built on the GM GMT-610 platform . In addition to some of facelift a 4.3-liter V-6 spark ignition engine with a maximum power of 200 hp (149 kW), a 4.8-liter V-8 gasoline engine with a maximum output of 270 hp (201 kW), a 5.3 l V8 gasoline engine with a maximum output of 285 hp (213 kW), a 6.0 l V8 gasoline engine with a maximum output of 300 hp (224 kW) or 345 hp (257 kW), 8.1-liter V8 gasoline engine,a turbocharged 6.6-liter V8 diesel engine with a maximum output of initially 250 hp (186 kW), later 260 hp (194 kW)  and a turbocharged 2.8-liter R4 diesel engine with a maximum power of 181 hp (135 kW).After 2016, the 6.6L Duramax diesel V8 was discontinued; a 2.8L inline-4 Duramax (the first four-cylinder in a full-size Chevrolet van since 1964) replaced it as the diesel engine offering. For 2018, an "EcoTec3" 4.3L V6 was introduced as the base gasoline engine the same year, CNG/LPG capability was added as an option to the 6.0L V8.

For 2021, the 6.0L V8 was replaced by an all-new 6.6L V8

The gearboxes are 4-speed overdrive 4L60E automatic transmissions. The vehicle is available with rear-wheel drive (G-series) and four-wheel drive (H-series) 1500-series vehicles used a 4L60E transmission while 2500 and 3500-series vehicles used a heavier-duty 4L80E unit.
