The Hongqi CA770 is a luxury saloon produced by the Chinese automaker First Automotive Works (FAW) from 1965 to 1981.

History

The model was exclusively state institutions and the leadership of the CCP available and was used until the 1990s in regularly at public events. Based on the CA770, the models CA771, CA772 and CA773 were created, which differed from the CA770 mainly by different lengths. The Hongqi CA770 was built at the FAW plant in Changchun (Manchuria produced) by hand. The production was not continuous. Rather, only when needed. From 1965 to 1981 FAW produced a total of 847 copies of the CA770.

1965 appeared with the Hongqi CA770 the successor model, which corresponded technically largely to the CA72, but had a revised body. The CA770 stayed in the program for 15 years. Hongqi developed during this time, although some stylistically independent prototypes for a successor model, but they did not go into series.

The body of the CA770 was redesigned. The designers strived to make the car appear lower and straighter than its predecessor. The edges were smooth, the frieze was repositioned and the wheel wells were redesigned. The grille was designed simpler; it consisted of 40 vertically arranged chrome struts.  The bumpers, which were plated as before, had no horns. The trapezoidal structure had four side windows. In the interior there were three rows of seats; a total of eight seats were planned. The Hongqi CA770 was based on the 1958 presented CA72 without changes.  It had the same chassis frame made of steel with additional cross struts. At the front, the wheels were suspended on wishbones and coil springs individually, the rear a rigid axle with leaf springs was used.  serving as a drive that used to CA72, 5.6 litre eight-cylinder gasoline engine of the type Hongqi 8V100Q. The cylinder bank angle was 90 degrees The mixture preparation of the 7.7: 1 compressed engine was carried out by means of a double carburettor.  The power was automatically switched two-speed transmission transmitted to the rear wheels.

Over the years, Hongqi made a few copies of the CA770 with special body versions:

  • The Hongqi CA770J was a full convertible on the unbacked chassis of the CA770. The vehicle was used in parades for representation purposes. In the passenger compartment grab bars were attached, so that the passengers could stand with the top down. From 1965 to 1972 FAW made five copies of the model. Three of them still exist today.  A specimen, which was designated CA770JG was equipped to protect passengers with an additional glass plate in front of the passenger compartment.
  • The Hongqi CA770TJ was a Landaulet version of the CA770. While the driver area was fully clad, there was a fold-back canopy above the passenger compartment. In 1984, Hongqi made two copies of this model. The occasion was the 35th anniversary of the People's Republic of China.
  • In the 1970s, three copies of the CA770 received a combination setup. The cars designated as CA770L remained in the factory.
  • From 1972 to 1975, a total of three vehicles were built as an ambulance (Hongqi CA770H). The basic structure of the notchback sedan remained; however, the boot lid was significantly increased.
  • Three copies received a pickup body.

On the basis of the CA770, several other models emerged, which differed from the CA770 mainly by different lengths and the number of seats.

  • The Hongqi CA 771 was a four-door sedan two rows of seats and shortened wheelbase, which was manufactured from 1967 to 1971. The rear doors were hinged at the front. The C-pillar immediately followed the rear doors.  During this time, depending on the source, 127 or 129 copies of the CA771 were made.
  • The Hongqi CA772 was an armoured version of the CA770. The weight of the car was 5000 kg. From this model created 12 copies, all of which were made in 1972.
  • The Hongqi CA773 was a four-door sedan with two rows of seats, which was positioned according to their length between the longer CA770 and the shorter CA771. The rear doors were - unlike the CA771, but as with the CA770 - rear hinged, and between the rear doors and the D-pillar was another window. From 1969-1976 Hongqi produced a total of 291 units of this model.
