History
The Royal Tiger was derived from the Leyland Tiger PS1 , the U in the type designation stands for the underfloor diesel engine,
The first Royal Tiger was built from 1950 to 1955. The chassis manufactured during this period were given the abbreviation PSU1 in the designation . The Royal Tiger was a chassis with centrally located underfloor engine .
The series was initiated by the 1950 increase in the size limit to about 9 m (30 feet) in length. Until the 1980s, it was common for chassis and bodies for buses were made by different manufacturers. The chassis produced by Leyland were therefore completed by bodywork companies . As superstructures the Ambassador of Duple or the Wayfarer I of Harrington were used. These buses were comfortable coaches with 26 seats and various body styles from the time.
These vehicles were motorized with a 9.8 l diesel engine (O600). Later built vehicles had a capacity of up to 41 seats, some vehicles were also built as multi-purpose buses for city and interurban traffic. One of the largest buyers was Southdown Coaches , who from 1952 to 1956 put into service more than 150 Leyland Royal Tigers with structures from Duple , Weymann and Harrington . Another manufacturer of superstructures was Plaxton.
The lighter chassis of the Leyland Tiger Cub was introduced in 1952. Later developed into a successful Leyland Leopard , it quickly supplanted the Royal Tiger in a short period of time from the UK market. In 1955, another series was produced with a different engine as Leyland Royal Tiger Worldmaster for export, but some copies could be sold on the domestic market. Some of these were coached as a city bus .
