Mercedes-Benz M 260 / M 264 Engine

Mercedes Benz
 Mercedes-Benz M 260 / M 264 Engine
M 264
Manufacturer:Mercedes Benz
Production period:since 2017
Style:In-line engine , four-cylinder
Engines:1.5 liters (1497 cm³)
2.0 liters (1991 cm³)
Previous model:M 270 / M 274

The M 260 / M 264 is a four-cylinder in line petrol engine from Mercedes-Benz .

The M 260 / M 264 is a successor to the M 270 / M 274 and part of a new, modular engine generation that will include 4 and 6 cylinder diesel engines as well as 4 and 6 cylinder gasoline engines . A high number of identical parts are used. The output increased of over 6 percent compared to its predecessor with the possibility for transversal and longitudinal installation:

M 260:Transverse installation as motor in models with driven front axle (front wheel drive)
M 264: longitudinally as motor in models with driven rear axle (rear wheel drive)

The displacement of the four-cylinder in - line engine is 1991 cm³ with a bore of 83 mm and a stroke of 92 mm, with a cylinder spacing of 90 mm. The compression ratiois 10.5 with aluminum four-valve cylinder head .

The change of charge is controlled by four valves per cylinder ( four-valve technology ) and two overhead camshafts driven by a timing chain . On the inlet side, the M264 has the variable valve control CAMTRONIC .The engine has a TwinScroll - turbocharger with an electric wastegate actuator. The twin-scroll loader combines the exhaust gas channels of two cylinders each in a flow-optimized manifold.

Behind the turbine of the turbocharger first a three-way catalyst is used. In addition, a particulate filter is fitted as standard in the underbody of the vehicle . Thus, the M 264 is one of the first gasoline engines with particulate filter.

Similar to the new inline six-cylinder gasoline engine M 256 gets the M 264 - but not the M 260 - a 48-V electrical system , in addition to the existing 12-volt electrical system. However, a belt-driven starter generator (RSG) is used here, replacing the alternator and starter. This can support the combustion engine for a short time with up to 10 kW (14 hp) in the speed range up to 2,500 rpm (boost function from the 48 V accumulator) and allows a partial recuperation of the vehicle's kinetic energy during braking in these 48 V batteries. Accumulator. In addition, the engine can be turned off while driving to sail without fuel consumption, Thus, every vehicle equipped with the M 264 should actually become a mild hybrid  On C300 W205 Mopf but shows that Mercedes also built by M-264 variants that are built without a belt starter generator and without 48-V battery, but with a classic starter and alternator. The engine also has an electric coolant pump at 48V level.
