The Mitsubishi 3000 GT is a sports car of the Japanese Mitsubishi Motors . It was built from summer 1990 to mid-2000 in Nagoya, Japan. In other countries, this sports car is also known as GTO .

History

The Mitsubishi 3000 GT is largely identical to the Dodge Stealth . Direct competitors include the Toyota Supra , the Nissan 300ZX and the Honda NSX .The prototype Mitsubishi HSX first presented in spring 1990 at the Tokyo Motor Show.Introduction of the model with pop-up headlights. In the United States was a parallel launch of Mitsubishi 3000GT and Dodge Stealth. The basic models of the first years of construction were still available with 12V SOHC engine.

From summer 1990 to fall 1994, the first version (with pop-up headlights) was produced, followed by the second edition from late 1994 to mid-2000.For the 1990s, the sports coupe combined novel technical systems such as four-wheel steering, electronically controlled shock absorbers, and active front spoiler and rear wing in the top version, which was sold in Europe as the 3000 GT and in the United States as the VR4. This, along with all-wheel drive and an anti-lock braking system, should help to improve driving safety.

MITSUBISHI-3000-GT-CONVERTIBLE

1995 and 1996, the second generation was sold in the US with electric metal folding roof (similar to the later Mercedes-Benz SLK ). This Spyder model has - to compensate for the additional weight resulting from the roof construction - through a boost pressure of 0.1 bar to 239 kW (325 hp).

The 3000 GT was built in three versions: the standard version, the VR4 version and the SL version. The SL version represents the luxury version, which was characterized by leather trim and a glass roof. The VR4 version is the most powerful version of the 3000 GT with Twin Turbo, 5-speed Getrag Transaxle transmission (6-speed from 2nd generation) and all-wheel drive . Especially for the Japanese market was built on the VR4 version based lighter and more powerful MR version, which was equipped with, inter alia, AP brakes.

For Europe and Australia, the body of the first model has been redesigned: In the place of the parking lights are washing nozzles for the behind hinged headlights, the parking light was offset together with the front indicators on the front bumper and arranged in line with additional mounted on the fenders reflectors. The European models also differ technically in a few points from the American VR4 model. The European versions were tuned for operation on German motorways and received for this improved engine cooling, transmission cooling and brake ventilation as well as sodium-filled exhaust valves and larger water-cooled turbochargers.

The 3000 GT

The engine of the Mitsubishi 3000 GT is the Mitsubishi Motors 6G72 , which was previously installed in the Mitsubishi Sigma . The engine achieves 210 kW (286 hp) in the 3000 GT by means of turbocharging through two parallel Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) TD04-9B (USA and Japan) and TD04-13G turbochargers (Europe and Australia).

Optical revision of the model such. B. Change to conventional ellipsoid headlights, elimination of the hood bumps and changes to front and rear apron, side skirts and taillights. The gearbox is replaced by a 6-speed version by Getrag. In the summer of 1998, another facelift took place on the 3000GT. The differences to the EU version were:

  • other environmental control panel
  • Alarm system no longer installed
  • slightly larger steering wheel
  • Brake calipers in red
  • partially reduced from two brake hoses to one brake hose per saddle at the front axle
