The design of the Alero anticipated the design study Alero Alpha, which was shown in 1997 as a futuristic styled sports coupe on the car salons.

The production vehicle was available as a four-door sedan and a two-door coupe with four- or six-cylinder engine. Chassis and engines he shared with the Pontiac Grand Am, Chevrolet Malibu and Oldsmobile Cutlass, since all models based on the N platform by General Motors.
