From July 1972  a diesel version with a 2.1 liter capacity was available, export with 2.0 liters and 56 hp. Visible were these models on a hump on the hood. This hump was necessary because the diesel engine was higher than the gasoline engines because of the overhead camshaft. With the diesel model, the taxi industry was targeted. The empty weight of the vehicles with gasoline engine was 1065 to 1090 kg. The models with diesel engine weigh 1210 to 1230 kg.

The record D was available as a basic version, as a luxury version "Rekord L" and with sporting equipment as a "record sprint". In September 1974, the equipment line "Berlina" was added, which set even more on comfort and features compared to the "L" version.

The production number of one million copies of the record D was celebrated with the special model "millionaire", which appeared in September 1976. As further special models followed in the spring of 1977, the versions "Maharaja", "Hit" and "Sport".

OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES
central gear lever,Opel automatic gearbox with 3 ratios (1 2.400, 2 1.480, 3 1, rev 1.920), only with 1.7-litre S and 1.9-litre S engines; limited slip
final drive; sunshine roof; electr.ically-heated rear window.

The self-supporting all-steel body offered space for five people. They were available in five different variants: as a two- and four-door sedan , as a three- and five-door caravan and as a coupe . Furthermore also as a van .

The front wheels were suspended by double, unequal length, wishbone (with progressive rate) coil springs and had torsion bar stabilizer and telescopic shock absorbers. The vehicle was equipped with a recirculating ball steering and yielding safety steering column. Rear was a rigid axle with four trailing arms, Panhard rod, progressive rate coil springs, torsion bar stabilizer and telescopic shock absorbers installed. Early versions had standard steering wheel circuitry (except coupes), the diesel models until the end of production. The "sports circuit" called middle circuit initially cost a small extra charge and was not available for the diesel versions. On request, a 3-speed automatic transmission was available.

In 1975, the compression ratio of the engines had to be reduced in order to continue operating the engine safely below the knock limit . Therefore, with the 1700 N engine, the power was reduced by 6 HP, the engine 1700 S fell away, and the range was supplemented by the 1900 N (standard petrol) engine. The engine 1900 SH (premium gasoline / hydraulic tappet), the power was reduced from 97 to 90 hp, in addition, there were from September 1975, the 2000 S with 100 hp.

The record D was produced from December 1971 to July 1977 with  1,128,196 copies built.
