Packard Super Eight

Packard Super Eight

The Packard Super Eight was the largest eight-cylinder passenger car model manufactured by the Packard Motor Car Company in Detroit since 1934 along with the Packard 12 .

History

The first model of this name appeared in 1934 as part of the 11th series and had an eight-cylinder engine with side-hung valves. This had 6267 cc capacity and developed 145 bhp (106.6 kW) at 3200 min. The engine power was transmitted via a single-disc dry clutch and a manual three-speed transmission with mid-circuit to the rear wheels. The car had mechanical four-wheel brakes.

There were chassis with three wheelbases - 3426 mm, 3604 mm and 3731 mm - available, which were provided with various bodies from 2 to  7 passengers.

In 1935, engine power was increased to 150 bhp (110 kW). The wheelbases of the 12th series were now 3353 mm, 3530 mm and 3658 mm. The 14th series 1936 corresponded almost completely to the 12th series.

In 1937, the 15th series came out with the smaller engine of the model Eight , which was included in the Super Eight model. The engine had 5212 cc and made 135 bhp (99 kW) at 3200 / min. For safety reasons, the rear hinged front doors had to give way to those with a front stop.

In 1938, the 16th series introduced somewhat chunkier fenders; Technically, the models remained unchanged, but the engine output dropped to 130 bhp (96 kW). Also in 1939 hardly any technical changes were made on the now 17th series; however, the number of superstructures was reduced to just six and steering wheel circuitry was available.

Following the discontinuation of the Packard Twelve of the 17th series in 1940, the name was passed on to the two largest models of Packard, the 160 and the 180 . After the Second World War , the model 180 became the Packard Custom Eight and the less expensive sister model 160 simply the Packard Super Eight .

The entire Packard model range for 1951 got new names (24th series); That's how the Super Eight became the Packard 300 , the last in the long line of the Packard Super Eight.
