Porsche 901 was the original sales name of the Porsche 911 at its presentation at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1963.
History
On September 12, 1963 at the Frankfurt IAA presented the new Porsche 901, and also presented at the Paris Motor Show in October of 1964, where the French automobile manufacturer Peugeot - which since the 1920s, the rights to all three-digit reference numbers with a zero in the middle for automobiles had the use of a protected model name by a third-party manufacturer became aware and Porsche pointed to its own rights. Porsche responded then and changed the name in Porsche 911, had by the fall of 1964, however, already 82 copies of the equipped with a 96 kW (130 hp), air-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine and sold the car as the 901 Coupe .
This name regulation, which made it almost impossible for all other car manufacturers to designate their models with a three-digit combination - if a zero in the middle - meant analogous to other road legal sports cars such as the Porsche 904 , which was sold as Carrera GTS , and the Porsche 906 , which got the name Carrera 6 . The Porsche 907 , Porsche 908 , Porsche 909 were racing cars However, without street legal approval, they were not affected by a likelihood of confusion with Peugeot road cars and could therefore compete in these races under these designations.
