The second generation, Espace II , is marketed from 1991. Its code name is P36 at Matra , J63 at Renault , and 316,518 copies are produced between 1991 and 1997. The milestone of 500,000 copies was crossed in July 1996 ( including 190,000 Space I).

The forms have been relaxed, without falling into the bio-design that submerges the market. The car is more dynamic, more modern. The windscreen pillars are extremely fine and covered by the side windows. The mirrors are integrated into body growths. The body plastic panels are all made of SMC ( Sheet Molding Compound ): the falling glass fibers are chopped and incorporated in a paste packaged in rolls. This material is deposited in the molds where it is hot pressed.

The finish is making enormous progress, ergonomics too, with rear rail seats in high-end finishes. The addition of a V6 engine and an automatic transmission sit Space in its status as a high-end vehicle. Features depending  on model Remote central locking. Digital clock. Rev counter. Radio cassette. Round heater controls. Electric front windows. Rear seats recline & have head restraints/armrests 7 seats in 3 rows. Remote radio controls. Swivelling front seats. Rear 2 seats optional. Reversible middle and rear seats. Centre console with switch panel.

MAY 1991 New range, all with catalyser, the 2.9-litre has 4-wheel disc brakes. Innumerable option packs available, such as twin glass tilting sunroofs and self-levelling suspension.
MAR 1993 Diesel variant with 2.1-litre Turbo.
MAY 1993 New electronically-controlled 4-speed auto on V6 RT and RX E with dual-mode Comfortand Sport settings, as on the Safrane saloon. Manual gearbox V6 discontinued. Air conditioning available.
