The third generation of the Renault Espace was first presented in October 1996.
Launched in 1996 with 2 gasoline engines (2.0 115 hp and 3.0 V6-12 valves 170 hp) to be modified in October 1998 and a diesel engine (" Engine G " 2.2 DT 113 hp which will increase to 110 hp in July 1998). The " F engine " 1.9 dTi will be released in November 1999.
Base model comes with driver airbag, power steering, adjustable steering wheel, electric pack, rear head restraints. The dimensions in mm are: Espace III released in December 1996: length 4517 × width 1810 (or 2070 with widened mirrors) × height 1690 (+ 75mm with roof bars) GrandSpace III released in January 1998: length 4787 × width 1810 (or 2070 with enlarged mirrors) × height 1690 (+ 75mm with roof bars). In total, Space III was produced from 1996 to 2002 with more than 365,200 copies.
Changes to the Espace III Phase 1 range:
- July 1998, transition from 2.2 DT from 113 to 110 hp.
- September 1998, the entire range is equipped with new wide mirrors, remote unlocking and rear retractable head restraints.
- October 1998, modification of the petrol offering with the 2.0 16S 140 hp and 3.0 V6-24 valves coupled to a adaptive box with floor control (the old was on the dashboard).
Phase 2 introduced in 2000 adds immobilizer, rear wiper housing and a redesign of the range. Also inaugurates the new 115 dhp 2.2 dCi diesel engine.
