Renault Type K engine

 K Renault engine history

The K Renault engine is a water-cooled automobile internal combustion four-stroke engine, with 4 cylinders in line as petrol and Diesel versions, with 1.4.1.5 and 1.6 litre sizes from 1995 on.

History

First available from 1995 The “K engine” is an evolution of the Energy engine, which it is intended to replace. The Energy engine was already an evolution of the “Cléon-Fonte engine”, on which a hemispherical cylinder head integrating the overhead camshaft, driven by a toothed timing belt had been mounted. Water-cooled, with a crankshaft 5 bearings, with shaft cams by a belt distribution toothed, with a cylinder head made of aluminium, OHV, developed and manufactured by Renault in the mid-1990s, making its appearance on the Mégane I. This engine is available in petrol and diesel versions, with 8 or 16 valves.

The “K engine” is therefore a final evolution of the “Cléon-Fonte engine”. The main modification of the “K engine” is made in the machining of the cylinders, since this engine no longer has removable liners. The cylinder head of the 8-valve petrol versions is taken from the Energy engine. The direction of rotation of this motor is clockwise (distribution side), as on the Cléon-Fonte motor and on the Energy motor. The first “K engine” appears on the Mégane I with a displacement of 1,598 cc, with an 8-valve cylinder head, type K7M. This engine will also be used on the Clio II, Scénic I, Dacia Logan I and Dacia Sandero I

From 1998, the K7M engine was fitted with a 16-valve cylinder head under the hood of the Laguna I phase 2, which gave rise to the K4M engine. This new engine replaces the F engine of 1.8 (8 valves) of the Laguna I phase 1. This engine will also equip the Clio II, Clio III, Mégane I phase 2, Mégane II, Mégane III, Scénic I, Scénic II, Scénic III, Laguna II, Laguna III, Modus, Twingo II RS, Wind, Kangoo I phase 2, Kangoo Kanoo, the “K engine” will be available in 1.4 16-valve K4J type, on the Clio II and Mégane I phase 2. It will also be fitted to the Clio III, Mégane II, Scénic II, Modus, etc. A 1.4 8-valve version of type K7J will be marketed to replace the 1.4 Energy engine on the Clio II, Dacia Logan I, Dacia Sandero I.

Diesel versions

The "motor K" also available in diesel version of 1461 cc Type K9K, more known as 1.5 dCi. It appeared on the Clio II phase 2, to replace the 1.9 D (“F engine”). This engine is fitted with high pressure common rail direct injection. In 2012, when the new Class A Type 176 was launched, Mercedes-Benz decided to use a less fuel-efficient diesel engine and called on Renault. At Mercedes-Benz, the K9K bears the designation OM 607. It will replace the OM 640. The engine will be integrated on all Type 176 diesels launched in 2012, Type 246, Type 117 and Type 156 launched in 2012 and 2013.

The peculiarity of the K4J and K4M engines is the fact that they have a 16 valve cylinder head similar to the F engines (F4P and F4R), moreover the K4J and K4M engines share the same timing kit and the same water pump as the engines F 16 valves (F4P and F4R).

Sports and Competition versions

Renault Sport developed its own version of the K4M: The K4M-854, developing 133 hp and 160 Nm, which will equip the Twingo II RS and the Wind 1.6 16v. This engine will also be fitted to the Clio III GT, in a version with slightly reduced performance (K4M-862: 128 hp and 155 Nm). Renault Clio II 1.6 16V (This is the first sporty version of the Clio II, before the release of the RS)

  • Renault Wind 1.6 16V
  • Renault Clio III GT
  • Secma F16
  • Clio Super 1600
