The first version of the SX4 was the successor of the compact model Suzuki Liana and the compact SUV Suzuki Ignis .
These two orientations are also reflected in the SX4, of which there are three versions. In addition to the usual forms as a five-door hatchback and four-door notchback, there is a cross- hatch based on the hatchback .
The crossover variant was first introduced to the market in Germany and marketed most aggressively; it is produced together with the identical Fiat Sedici at Magyar Suzuki in Hungary. This SX4 is intended to represent a connection between sedan and off-road vehicle . Accordingly, the car is optionally available with switchable four- wheel drive (i-AWD).
The premiere of the Suzuki SX4 took place at the 76th Geneva Motor Show .
The SX4 is powered by either a 1.5-liter supercharged petrol engine (fuel type Super unleaded), the 73 kW (99 hp), a gasoline engine (fuel type Super unleaded) with 79 kW (107 hp) or 1.6-liter a 1.9-liter common rail - diesel engine with 88 kW (120 hp). The carbon dioxide emissions are between 162 g / km and 185 g / km. Both the standard equipped with a diesel particulate filter and the gasoline engines meet the Euro 4 standard.
For the North American market, there is a gasoline engine with 2.0 liters and 112 kW (152 hp).
At the 77th Geneva Motor Show, the notchback version of the SX4 was introduced, which appeared on the European market in October 2007. In China, this body design was already available at the same time as the launch of the steep tailgate. The common-rail diesel engines come from Fiat, the gasoline engines from Suzuki.
A few weeks after the identical Fiat Sedici and the SX4 was slightly changed in the late summer of 2009. As part of this facelift, the front end has been revised and received a new bumper, which has a cross-blade less, and a slightly modified grille and smaller fog lights. In the offered engines was still the 1.6-liter gasoline engine "M16a" available. From now on, it delivers 88 kW (120 hp), which means a power increase of 13 hp.
The previous 1.9-liter diesel was replaced by a 2.0-liter diesel with 99 kW (135 hp). In addition, all models now fulfill the Euro-5 emissions standard. The revised model was presented at the IAA 2009. As standard, the SX4 had the complete package of airbags consisting of driver and passenger airbags, side and windowbags as well as side impact protection in all equipment lines. The version with switchable four-wheel drive (i-AWD) had plastic skins, underride protection, a roof rail and increased ground clearance.
In the middle of 2014 the production ran out, but until the summer of 2015 storage vehicles were still available. The successor already appeared in autumn 2013 as SX4 S-Cross.
