The Hilux, which was produced from August 1988, grew in wheelbase to 2616 mm in the two-door standard model. The seams of the cargo area body were now particularly sealed, since they were previously susceptible to rust. Now there was also more space behind the front seats than in the last generation, for an extra charge, swing seats were available for the rear passengers. The optional automatic transmission now had 4 gears.
The Hilux received a slight facelift in early 1992, with primarily changed the grill and the new Toyota emblem was attached. At the same time, the versions for the North American market were now produced at the NUMMI plant in Fremont, California . As of March 1995, the Toyota Tacoma replaced the Hilux in North America.
The Hilux of the type YN 80 was produced from April 1989 to March 1997 as a licensed construction also by Volkswagen under the name Taro . The conception and the parts came from Toyota. The assembly was carried out at Volkswagenwerk Hannover until 1995 , and then until the end of production at Volkswagenwerk Emden . The Taro was like the Hilux in the versions as a two-seater (Single Cab) and as XtraCab and DoubleCab available.
