Volkswagen 1.9 TDI EA188 engine

Volkswagen AG engines
Volkswagen 1.9 TDI EA188 engine
VW EA 188
Production period:1998-2010
Manufacturer:Volkswagen AG
How it works:diesel
displacement:1896 cm 3
Fuel supply:Unit injector
Engine charging:VTG turbochargers

The EA188 covers the power range from 45 to 230 kW.  There are line engines with three, four or five cylinders, and a V10 engine with displacement sizes from 1.2 to 4.9 liters. EA188 engines were launched in 1998 in the VW Passat B5 used. The series EA 188 was developed starting from 1996 from the predecessor series EA 180. EA 188 was replaced by the series EA 189 .

The 1.9-liter TDI engine is based essentially on the 1.9-liter TDI engine of the EA180 series and has a cylinder block made of gray cast iron. The engines are water-cooled supercharged four-cylinder in-line engines. The piston hubs and the connecting rods of the engines are trapezoidal in design. The eight valves of the motors are actuated by a toothed belt driven overhead camshaft.

The cylinder head houses the unit injector, which is actuated by an additional cam on the camshaft via a roller rocker arm. The injection pressure is up to 2050 bar. On the cylinder head, the vacuum pump of the engines is driven, which is driven by the camshaft. The oil filter housing of the engines with paper filter is upright, the engine coolant pump is integrated in the cylinder block. Part of the exhaust gas is returned to the combustion chamber. Previously, it is cooled by a heat exchanger. For engine charging, a VTG turbocharger is used. The engine control is taken over by the engine control unit Bosch EDC 15P and from 2003 by the EDC 16.
